This one takes inspiration from a classic instrument used by one of the greatest bassists in rock history. The Ampeg AMVB-1 has a few eyecatching features, but the most obvious are the through body f-holes. I’ve made them even bigger, and sized and shapped them to fit the contours of the Ysabel body.
The most well known AMVB-1 player was Rick Danko of the Band. Rick lay down some amazing grooves with his Ampeg. His work on Neil Young’s “Revolotuion Blues” is a great example. Rick added a P-Bass Pickup to his for a fatter sound than the original pickup. On the fretless Ysabel, I’ve used a Serek B90 for a super warm neck tone, and TV jones thunderblade for a little more power in the bridge.
The body is a single piece of local ash. It was dyed black, and sanded black before a red color was applyed to the top and back. It has a three piece cherry neck with a Pau Ferro board.
You can see some awesome clips of Asher Rowland demoing this bass on my Instagram page. Asher plays in the fantastic funk outfit Exotic Fruit Tour. You should stream their new record, it’s awesome. Catch them live, and you’ll see Luke Glass playing his Sky Scorcher. Asher came came over with a Fender Rumble and a small collection of vintage EHX and Boss pedals.
